I am so extremely sorry to hear about your grandson. It must be devastating, and I can only imagine how heart-wrenching. It's difficult to understand and yes, we need to get to the bottom of this. My heart goes out to you. - Jane - Jane

I wish someone knew the answer. This is a horrific way to find your child. When they die unexpectedly and there is nothing you have done wrong. You don't even know how heart-wrenching it is...my daughter and I found my grandson in his crib in the early morning...he was just learning to turn over...face down...hard and dark blue...you just want to die yourself. He had just had a second vaccination and he was on a vinyl crib..two risk factors. I just don't understand and someone needs to get to the bottom of this somehow...we need to pump more money into research. - Painfully Confused

I agree. The more you read on the cause of SIDS the more it becomes very clear that SIDS are linked to toxins found in crib mattresses. - Strictly Organic

Yes, babies have died for unexplained reasons in places other than a crib. SIDS is not a disease - it's label that is given whenever the cause of death cannot be medically explained within certain parameters. They rule certain things out, then deem it as a SIDS case. There can be different possible causes of death that don't fall into these parameters and are never investigated. Chemical poisoning from a mattress is not an issue that's investigated at time of death. Nor is death from vaccination. So they are labeled as SIDS. Of course there has to be some underlying cause and it's probably safe to say that deaths labeled as SIDS are not all caused by the same thing. - Jane

off gasing

Off-gasing happens with a lot of synth products like plastics, and many are tested, but still. that new car smell may be filled with dangerous gases. With cribs, make sure the bedding isn't too cushioned or the baby might squish into it if he/she laid face down, and could get hurt [or worse!] from not being able to breath. A good place to get boys baby bedding is KeepingInTheLoop.com and others. I would try there first and foremost. - Brian Sparks

Margaret, regarding your question about vaccines and SIDS, many baby deaths labeled as SIDS (over 1100) have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database as vaccine reactions. http://www.medalerts.org/index.html

This does not mean that all of them have been confirmed as being directly caused by the vaccine (most have not) but some have been confirmed and the families compensated through the vaccine program.

I also question your statement "It's also known that vaccinations have caused baby deaths that have been labeled as SIDS." Is there scientific evidence to support this? - Margaret

Yes more research is always good. While there is certainly nothing wrong with using an organic mattress, it is also important for caregivers to remember that other risk factors such as secondhand smoke, tummy or side sleeping, and bedding that is too soft or fluffy are also likely contributing risks for SIDS and/or accidental suffocation of infants. Adding to those recommendations with the use of an organic mattress certainly won't hurt! - Margaret

Unexplained baby deaths have always been around for various reasons, but not at the level they've been in the past 50 or 60 years. I don't think that toxic gasses in mattresses and vaccines are the only reasons babies die, but these are things that can be avoided. There has not been enough quality research done on either of these issues to say for certain that it's been proven or disproven. We definitely need more research. Hopefully this will happen soon, and in the meantime I think it's prudent to take steps to be safe. - Jane

There is no reserach basis for the theory that toxic gases and/or immunizations are contributing factors for SIDS. SIDS has been around for centuries--much longer than we have been vaccinating our babies or using flame retardant chemicals. - Margaret

MK,

Yes, you are right that even organic mattresses are required to be flame retardant. I wrote about this in my article:

http://www.healthychild.com/toxic-baby-crib-mattress/safe-non-toxic-organic-crib-mattresses/

I explain in this article how to find an organic mattress that is truly non-toxic. There are some natural alternatives to chemical fire retardants that are safe and non-toxic.

And yes, unfortunately organic, non-toxic mattresses are more expensive than the cheap toxic materials that are mass-produced and people are used to buying at low prices. But well worth it in my opinion. A BabeSafe mattress cover is also safe and a good way to go if you can't afford a non-toxic mattress.

even organics have flame retardants

This is a great article, exploring the data without forcing the issue either way. I, too, have done a lot of research on this topic, and my baby sleeps on a BabeSafe cover as a result.

Just one note. An organic mattress itself is not the solution. Even the organic mattresses are by law required to have flame retardants. In order to have a fully chemical-free mattress, you need a doctor's prescription, and the prices on these mattresses are out of control. - mk

I know that in this economy mattress are the last thing you want to worry about, but the truth is that regular mattress do contain hazardous materials that can jeopardize the health of your family and the environment. Organic Mattresses might cost a little bit more but will last a long time, and you can never put a price on the health benefits. And if you shop around sometimes there are discounts and specials for organic mattresses. Knowledge is power and I thank you for posting this very informative article.

And what about expensive mattresses too...

When my son was born, I asked my FIL to gift us an expensive crib mattress that had additional fire retardant features. After 2 1/2 years of difficulties, recent testing has found that our son has Tungsten levels off the top of the chart, as well as high Antimony and others - which are used in fire retardant coatings, etc!!
Testing on me has shown that he did not get this metals burden from me when I was pregnant.
I used to think that organics were about branding and spin, and and easy way to charge more money. But now, with what our son has been through, we've started investing in organic products because we are coming to better understand that the easiest and least expensive way for non-organic manufacturers to provide thier products for sale may include using scary and harmful (yet legal) things in the process.
I beleive that I made a mistake by going for the expensive mattress that had extra fire-retardant features and not doing more research for a safer crib mattress. I beleive that the crib mattress is responsible for his chart-busting metals levels. And I beleive that with the right support, his body can start chipping away at these toxins so they will not have as much impact on him going forward. - LeoEtc

Yes, that's a very good question. I wrote an article about co-sleeping and toxic mattresses at this link:
http://www.healthychild.com/toxic-sleep/safe-co-sleeping-on-a-non-toxic-mattress/

I'm an advocate of co-sleeping and I co-slept with my daughter for a long time. But we do need to address the issue of toxic gases coming from these mattresses as well.

Since a lot more parents are now co-sleeping with their children, in part to help reduce SIDS risk, we need to also consider what toxins might be in adult mattresses. - Annie @ PhD in Parenting
