How To Prevent Crib Death

The danger of crib death can be eliminated by ensuring that babies sleep on mattresses and underbedding known to be free from the elements phosphorus, arsenic and antimony.

The BabeSafe® range of mattresses complies with this requirement.

All other types of crib mattress (and any other mattresses on which babies sleep, e.g. adults' mattresses, mattresses of other children, sheepskins, etc) must be enclosed in a BabeSafe® slip-on mattress cover or in suitable polythene.

BabeSafe® mattress covers and mattresses are available at babycare retail outlets throughout New Zealand, and from distributors in the USA, Britain and Australia. (See the panel on the right side of this page for ordering information.)

It is imperative to use the correct bedding on top of a BabeSafe® mattress or BabeSafe® mattress cover or polythene-wrapped mattress. Use a fleecy pure cotton (flannelette) underblanket and tuck this in securely. Then make the bed using sheets and a pure cotton or pure woollen overblanket.

Do not use any of the following as baby bedding:

  • Sheepskin Moisture-resistant crib mattress protector
  • Acrylic underblanket
  • Sleeping bag
  • Duvet

BabeSafe® mattresses and covers should be cleaned by wiping with pure soap and water.

Do not use chemical bleaches or sterilants.

There has not been one reported crib death on a BabeSafe® mattress cover or on a BabeSafe® mattress or on a mattress correctly wrapped in polythene.

Use the information provided here as an educational resource for determining your options and making your own informed choices. Healthy Child Online does not claim that mattress-wrapping has been 100% scientifically proven to prevent SIDS to the satisfaction of SIDS researchers. Orthodox SIDS research organizations maintain that there is insufficient evidence to recommend mattress wrapping.

Parents should also be aware that no research has disproved the gaseous poisoning explanation for crib death. Contrary to publicity, the report of the expert group chaired by Lady Limerick (UK Limerick Report) did not disprove the theory - in fact, Dr. Sprott maintains that it provides further confirmation of it. Furthermore, it is a fact that there have been no reported crib deaths among the over 100,000 babies in New Zealand who have slept on correctly wrapped mattresses.

I believe this is crucial information for parents, regardless of whether or not the toxic gas explanation has been 100% proven. Therefore, I feel compelled to make Dr. Sprott's information - and the mattress covers - available through my newsletter and website. After weighing the available evidence, parents can decide for themselves whether they want to wait for the SIDS research organizations or the government to endorse mattress-wrapping or to "play it safe" as many parents have done in New Zealand. An inexpensive, non-toxic protective cover can certainly do no harm.

PLEASE NOTE: Toxic gases are present in adult beds as well as babies' cribs. Due to adult physiology, adults and older children are not in danger (except, perhaps long-term toxicity that's not been studied). But many babies sleep with their parents on adult-sized mattresses. Unfortunately, only bassinette, crib-sized and co-sleeper mattress covers are available at this time. So you need to know that your baby is not protected in your bed if your mattress is not wrapped correctly. Face-up sleeping helps reduce the risk of exposure to the toxic gases (a baby does not breath in as much gas if he or she is face up), but does not prevent crib death. We are sorry to say that the manufacturer of the mattress covers does not make adult sized mattress covers and we cannot recommend a properly tested material for wrapping your own mattress.
