organic-crib-mattressThe Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is considering adding the following warning  label to all bassinets, cradles and non-full-size cribs:

"Use only the pad provided by manufacturer."

This may seem like a logical warning label to put on bassinets and cradles. However, the unintended consequence of this rule will lead to manufacturers having no choice but to stop selling non-toxic, organic bassinet, cradle and porta-crib mattresses. Most of these pads/mattresses are used as alternative replacements to the typical vinyl and polyurethane foam pads/mattresses that come with cradles and bassinets. If a warning label states "use only the pad provided by manufacturer", another mattress manufacturer will not be able to sell a pad/mattress that is obviously going to be used as a replacement pad in a bassinet or cradle - for liability reasons. Retailers will not want to carry them and violate CPSC rules. They will simply have to stop making and selling them.

There are already extremely few manufacturers making these non-toxic, organic pads/mattresses and this would be a huge step backward. The manufacturers who make the cheap, flimsy, chemical pads that come with the cradle or bassinet currently have no incentive to make the original pad with non-toxic organic materials since these materials are expensive and would greatly increase the manufacturing costs. Most of these pads are made low-cost overseas.

Environmental and health conscientious consumers deserve the right to choose not to use the original pads/mattresses and to choose pads/mattresses that meet their expectations, as long as those pads fit properly and otherwise comply with CPSC requirements.

It's important to let the CPSC know that safety is not just about acute physical safety, e.g. proper firmness, but chemical exposure and environmental safety is just as important to the health of infants.

The CPSC is currently accepting public comments on this issue. I have signed on to an in-depth comment (you can view it here) that will be submitted to the CPSC.

We are including the following statement in this comment and asking parent consumers to sign on. As a concerned grandparent, I choose the non- toxic organic mattress for my grandchildren as I had seen them sleep thru the nights very comfortably than their own mattress in their homes. Aslo the conventional mattress is very dangerous with all these chemicals that is NOT neccessary to use for babies. Why do you HAVE to use the chemicals for??? Make profits out of it.

thank you!

I am so grateful to have found somewhere to buy a non-toxic mattress protector for my child. It is shameful that consumers have to seek as hard as they do to avoid the risks inherent in modern mass-produced mattresses & the like. Vulnerable newborns should automatically be protected from dangerous fumes & chemicals.

Non-toxic organic mattresses should be the norm in all households. We need to focus our efforts as a country on ways that we can ensure a clean healthy world for our children and their children. Unfortunately most large companies are focused on making money not the ethical treatment of our enviroment. Doing away with the ethical companies that create real non-toxic organic mattresses would be a tremendous loss for enviromental efforts everywhere.

I am very concerned about the toxic mattresses available for children to sleep on. I am very chemically sensitive myself and know that the pvc and other chemicals in those new mattresses affect me neurologically. I can only imagine what they may do to tiny bodies and developing systems. We must stand strong to allow the choice of non-toxic organic mattresses to be available for our children and grandchildren.

Keep organic mattresses
written by Gail Veiby, September 26, 2010
It is important for parents to be able to choose the safest mattress for their new baby. After doing a lot of research, I chose an organic mattress for both of my children. When you think about all the time they spend sleeping, it really is a no-brainer to provide a chemical-free area, especially while their little bodies are developing.

As for the fire-safety argument, is it really the smarter choice to subject them to a huge chemical load from birth on, not knowing how this is going to affect them physically or mentally, in order to prevent the extremely small risk of a fire? The fact is we don't know how all these chemicals are affecting babies/children and given a choice, I think most parents educated on the subject would err on the side of caution and forgo the chemicals.

After having lost my son to SIDS and having children with metabolic disorders, I did a lot of research where these are concerned. The very thought of having to subject our children to these chemical death traps that they now call mattresses is appalling. So many people are uneducated and prior to my son's death I was too. We are expecting another baby and the very thought of not having another option scares the daylights out of me after already loosing a child that could have been related to the use of these chemicals. People deserve these options, not to be bullied into buying garbage shipped in from foreign countries with no standards just because they are cheap!

Lemme get this straight: you're cutting back limits of lead and phthalates in things that kids under 12 *might* touch (good in theory, we don't want the children overexposed to toxic chemicals), but you don't regulate the levels of equally toxic chemicals in their beds already - and now you want to legislate away the only safe way parents have left to keep these toxins away from their kids? On what planet does that make any sense whatsoever? Not this one....

I've personally chosen to stick with traditional mattresses for my children and haven't had any problems but it's not right for the government to remove the alternative choice from families. Give us basic information and let us make our own choices. We're not children and we don't need the government to parent us or our children.

I had originally planned to use the "mattress" included with the cradle I bought for my baby, until I opened the package. The mattress was about a half inch thick, and absolutely reeked of uncured plastic when I opened the bag. It was awful, and the mattress itself was so flimsy that It folded in half when I tried to put a sheet on it. Tell me that isn't a SIDS risk. I promptly went and bought an chemical-free mattress pad, which arrived odor free and firm enough to withstand the rigors of a bedsheet.

The Tag Recommendations are Bogus
written by Deborah Jordan, September 30, 2010
I think the wording could be redone to say that all people have to do is make sure the mattress that they chose fit snugly inside the bed frame. That's it. Do not pull the chemical-laden-non-wool over consumers eyes, blinding them into choosing only what's shoved in their face. A lot of people may not be aware how toxic mattresses are. By the way, mattresses should have warning tags on them, listing out the chemicals contained therein. Where is the FDA here? There is no protection whatsoever and it's the governments fault.

This decision needs to be left up to the parents. If there are going to be regulations, the regulations should be that no mattress can contain toxic chemicals, not that parents should be forced to accept and use them for their children. I had never heard of how toxic traditional mattresses are until after my son was born. If I didn't have a choice to purchase a non-toxic mattress, I wouldn't purchase a mattress, I would just use a towel or blanket.

Thank you for organizing this. I agree! The pad that came with our bassinet was the same thing - folded in half when I put the sheet on. I wasn't aware of the choice to get a new pad, so I just put a few folded recieving blankets on top and altered the sheet so it would fit without buckling. Our bassinet DOES say "do not use any other pad", but I tend to not pay attention to the warning labels, because it also says to not use any bedding...um, are you kidding? Lay my kid on a plastic pad with no sheet, and no blanket over him? NO thanks.

We used an organic cotton mattress for our crib for health reasons and would want that same freedom of choice for any other parent. Without all of those chemicals in the pad we were far less worried about what our children were breathing in for the many, many hours that they spend sleeping, especially as babies.

We are all trying to err on the side of caution, however since opinions differ on the best way to do that it is important that the public not lose their freedom of choice.

I for one will not abide to a nanny state. I'm an American who's quite capable of making the decision on what my child can and can not sleep on, and no where is it the CPSC's decision to tell me or anyone else that a child sleeping on a mattress that's free of toxic chemicals is not our right. The CPSC should be looking out for our well being, not putting our children into danger. It's disgusting.

All companies should make it known to customers that they can (and have the right to) use any mattress on their cribs, bed frames, etc. By recommending and limiting choices, if those mattresses are ever thought to cause harm or be linked to any disease or problematic condition, then those manufacturers that are recommending the mattresses will be at fault and held liable. It is not only in the public's best interest, but also in the interest of the companies themselves, to put the responsibility of making the safest and best mattress choice for their families in the hands of the buyer. And to have as many choices as possible.

I am a grandmother who has purchased crib mattresses and then twin mattresses for my twin grandchildren. Be a true Consumer Product Safety Commission and make truly safe mattresses a requirement, instead of making manufacturer's chemical laden mattresses mandatory. Stand up for true safety for children (and adults), more of whom are suffering from childhood cancers, autism, adhd, asthma, birth defects from parental and pre-natal exposures, and constant exposures to toxic cleaning products, toxic pesticides and fertilizers, "air fresheners," and the concerted efforts and synergy of some 80,000 untested chemicals that flood our environment from the chemical mega-industry lobby. Most fire deaths are from smoke inhalation, not burning in a fire. Babies and children are not smoking in their beds. Mattresses made from non-toxic materials are made that are far safer in fit and toxicity than those made to meet the lowest common denominator, not the highest, and SAFEST, quality. Be a true guardian of public safety, listen to the Union of Concerned Scientists and the many scientists and physicians who KNOW the consequences of drenching people in unsafe chemicals.

The American ideal is a 'free market' but creating a label that would discourage the sale and creation of alternate products. As parents and consumers we do have the right to choose not to use a particular mattress pad. Instead of doing this it would make more sense to require manufacturers to standardize sizes.

Organic should not be Banned
written by Carrissa Stalcup, February 14, 2012
I believe that the CPSC is well-intentioned, however, Many parents view it as a ban on an alternative mattress. If you wish to keep mattresses well-fitting, consider forcing all crib manufacturers to put a size indicator on the crib so parents know what size mattress to purchase for replacement. That seems to be less restricting for parents who only want what is best for their babies.
