Prevent
the Flu with A Vaccine?
by Jane Sheppard
We've
now entered into the "cold and flu season"
with the flu fear mongers out there in full
force trying to scare parents into vaccinating
their kids for flu. The flu shot marketing
season has begun. This is a reminder that,
in addition to other safety issues and adverse
effects, the majority of flu vaccines still
contain mercury, a dangerous neurotoxin banned
by the FDA in over-the-counter drug preparations.
Why would it be safe to inject any amount
of mercury into the bodies of babies and young
children? If you are considering the flu vaccine
for your children (or yourself), please take
the time to become informed.
A
common misperception that most people have
is that the flu vaccine will protect them.
First, the viral strains in the vaccine have
to match the circulating influenza disease
and this is difficult to predict each year.
Many times they miss the mark. Second, only
a small percent of all flu-like illness in
any given flu season is actually the flu.
Most of the bacterial or viral illnesses that
may have symptoms like the flu, but are not
influenza, cannot be protected against with
any vaccine. And third, the current recommendation
to give the flu vaccine to young children
is not based on proven effectiveness. A 2004
study from Japan showed that no protection
was found against influenza A from the flu
shot in 6-24 month-old children (Maeda 2004).
Instead
of further disrupting your children's immune
system with another vaccine, the most important
thing you can do is strengthen and boost their
overall health and natural immunity to keep
them healthy. Keep in mind that expressing
childhood inflammatory diseases is an essential
part of the development of the immune system.
Every time the immune system works naturally
to dispel a cold or flu virus, your child's
immunity is strengthened, as long as this
healing process is not impeded by suppressive
drugs. Even though our children's illnesses
can be challenging, it's not a bad thing for
healthy kids to get sick!
The
good news is that colds and flu can be successfully
treated with effective, natural medicines
that assist the body's healing process without
the side effects or complications that can
arise from using pharmaceuticals. The following
articles are provided to assist you in making
informed choices and keeping your children
healthy throughout the season.

in Harmony with Colds and Flu

Taking
care of sick children can be a rather challenging
aspect of being a parent. Waking up in the
middle of the night to the sounds of your
child's cough, feeling your child's feverish
body, and cleaning up vomit is something you
may be familiar with. We all knew there would
be times like this in our parenting experience.
It's inevitable that kids get sick. It's a
necessary part of growing up, a normal part
of childhood. Read

Treating
Children's Flus
Excerpt from FLU: Alternative Treatments
and Prevention by Randall Neustaedter
OMD, North Atlantic Books, 2005
Some
special issues apply to children with the
flu. First, children can develop high fevers
with much less severe accompanying symptoms
than adults. A child with a 104º (40º
C) temperature is miserable, but can also
quickly rally. An adult with this level of
fever feels as if he will die. Second, because
children have easily weakened digestive functions,
they tend to develop more digestive symptoms
than adults. They often have vomiting and
diarrhea with the flu, sometimes as one of
the first few symptoms of illness. Third,
children go through stages of the flu fairly
quickly and the treatment regimen may need
to change frequently during the course of
the illness to match the symptom picture.
This applies especially to homeopathic medicines.
A medicine that fits the picture on day one
may transition to a new medicine on day two
and again on day four. Read

Managing
Colds
by Randall Neustaedter, OMD, Lac, CCH
Usually a cold begins with a runny nose and
tiredness. Sometimes babies are just fussy.
These symptoms may be accompanied by fever
or sore throat. It may be difficult to distinguish
colds from allergies or teething. Viruses
cause colds, and they are spread easily from
one child to another. If its going around,
its probably a cold. If its not
accompanied by a change in energy or fussiness,
it may be allergies. If congestion persists,
it may be allergies or a sinus infection.

The
Flu Vaccine and You
What Parents Need to Know About
the New Recommendations
By
Richard Pitt
We
like to think that the advice we get from
health organizations and medical professionals
is determined solely by unbiased concerns
and supported by scientific evidence. However,
as most of us are aware, other factors influence
decisions regarding health policy. The most
obvious of these is the economic and political
influence of the drug companies, which has
grown considerably in the last 20 years. Another
factor is the psychological and social impacts
of the events of September 11, 2001, which
have helped to create in this country what
many are now calling "a culture of fear."

Flu
Vaccine: Stay Out of My Womb!
Commentary
by Dawn Richardson
Pregnant
women everywhere know the feeling of making
it to the milestone of
their second trimester. For most, queasiness
starts to subside, energy
returns in spurts, and of course there is
that indescribable feeling of
becoming aware of your developing baby's movements.
You've
altered your diet, exercised, stayed away
from over the counter
medications, your true hair color is revealing
itself, and that wonderful
bottle of wine with the Surgeon General's
warning will continue stay buried
in the back of the refrigerator awaiting the
skinnier days ahead.
You
ask yourself, "Is there anything more
that I can do for me and my baby
during the remainder of my pregnancy?"
Well, according to the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) and the federal government's
Advisory Committee on
Immunization Practices (ACIP) there is - get
the flu vaccine before this
year's flu season hits. According to the CDC
and ACIP, it was estimated
that an average of 1 to 2 hospitalizations
among pregnant women could be
prevented for every 1,000 pregnant women immunized.
(Prevention and Control
of Influenza: Recommendations of ACIP. MMWR
- May 1, 1998; 47)
My
initial pregnant maternally protective hormonal
response to this was
utter disbelief. How could a biological pharmaceutical
product be
recommended for routine use for all healthy
second and third trimester
pregnant women? As I looked into this further,
I became outraged and
inspired to share the truth with pregnant
women so they could make up their
own minds. Here is what I found. Read

Vaccine
Exemptions: Your Child Can Attend School Without
Vaccines
Parents
should know that even though there are vaccines
that are considered mandatory for attending
school in the U.S., there are legal exemptions
that you can take so that your kids are allowed
into school without being vaccinated. Most
school officials will not inform parents about
exemptions. It is important to know your rights.

individual state exemptions:

Is
Your Teen Suffering From Acne? Clear Acne
Naturally at the Source
I recently found the ZenMed system, a product
that is designed to treat both adult and teen
acne at its source, using the finest herbal
ingredients. I highly recommend this system
since it is formulated with natural ingredients
that have been proven over centuries to heal
skin problems such as acne, and promote a
healthy, clear complexion from the inside.
This skin care system prevents and treats
acne both internally and topically and provides
lasting results.
I
know the ZenMed system works to heal acne.
I suffered from severe acne as a teen and
used many medications and harsh treatments,
including long-term antibiotics, Accutane,
and many toxic topical products. I didn't
know any better as a teen and thought these
medications and products would work. They
did not and the long-term antibiotics devastated
my immune system. The acne continued into
my adult years, and I am very happy to have
found the ZENMED Derma Cleanse System. It
cleared the acne that I had been struggling
with for 35 years after using it for only
3 weeks! It really works! It has the best,
natural, non-toxic ingredients, and I am thrilled
to recommend it to parents for helping their
teens clear their skin. Acne can be devastating
to a teen's self-image and must be treated
holistically with safe, natural ingredients.
My eleven year-old daughter is beginning to
experience acne and starting to use the ZenMed
system. I am very grateful that she will not
have to go through what I did as a teen. -
