Liver Oil Essential in the Winter Months
Now
that we are headed into the winter months,
I'd like to call attention again to the extraordinary
benefits of cod liver oil, which contains
the omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. Cod
liver oil is an important supplement for everyone,
especially children and pregnant women. In
numerous studies, the omega-3 fats found in
cod liver oil have been shown to increase
immunity, fight infections, improve concentration,
memory, asthma, allergies, and learning and
behavior problems. It is most important for
boosting the immune system to prevent disease,
and for the development of the brain and nervous
system. Cod liver oil is essential for pregnant
women since, in addition to providing significant
nutrition for both mother and baby, it helps
to prevent premature births, low birth weight
and other complications. Pregnant mothers
who take cod liver oil ensure adequate levels
of DHA in their breast milk, which means adequate
brain development in their babies.
Cod liver oil also contains substantial amounts
of fat-soluble vitamins A and D in the form
that is non-toxic in large doses. Both vitamins
A and D profoundly affect the immune system
and are very useful in fighting infections.
A deficiency of vitamin A has substantial
negative effects on the immune system, and
any infection greatly increases the need for
vitamin A. The vitamin A found in cod liver
oil is readily used by the body, unlike the
carotenes found in vegetables like carrots
or squash, which need the proper fats and
other nutrients to convert to vitamin A.
Vitamin D stimulates immunity and may help
prevent colds and flu. Plenty of sunshine
is the best source of vitamin D. It's interesting
that the cold and flu season happens at the
same time of the year that there is very little
sunshine. The article below suggests that
flu and other viruses may be prevented by
supplementing with vitamin D.
