Celebration of Twelve Happy Parenting YearsMy
little girl turned twelve today! This is a major big deal for both of us. As we
head into a different phase of my daughter's young life, I am in awe of her exuberance,
power and awareness. She continues to be my best teacher. As I reflect on all
the mistakes I've made over the past twelve years, and celebrate what I believe
I did do right, one thing stands out more than anything else. Eight years ago,
on her fourth birthday, she woke up and said "Mommy, I don't need your milk
anymore". That was when she weaned herself. Extended
breastfeeding was the most natural and healthy thing in the world for us. I'm
thankful I didn't care what anyone thought about this. I didn't try to hide it
at all because I knew that I was doing the absolute best thing for my daughter.
In pondering the reasons why she is now so healthy and secure, I know without
a doubt that extended breastfeeding has played a major role. I
am in no way a perfect or even a great parent, and I cringe at some of the mistakes
I've made. But I continue to give it my best shot and always strive to understand
and connect more with my daughter. I have absolutely no regret at all about my
choice to not vaccinate, about co-sleeping and other choices that many may think
of as "radical". In my opinion, the most important piece of advice I
can offer to other parents is to truly not care what other people think. Gather
as much information you can to make informed decisions, and most importantly,
follow your own instincts to do what's best for your unique child. If you create
and sustain a strong connection and bond with your child, you will always instinctively
know what he or she really needs. Never mind the peanut gallery. They can't possibly
know what's right for you, and it is truly none of their business. I
continue to add many new articles to Healthy Child so you can learn more about
breastfeeding, strengthening immunity, holistic medicine, vaccines, nutrition,
environmental toxins, co-sleeping, baby wearing, and other articles on nurturing
and connecting with your children. Feel free to go
