Functional medicine is a science-based field of health care that is grounded in the principles of biochemical individuality, patient-centered care, dynamic balance of internal and external disease factors, web-like interconnections of physiological factors, health as a positive vitality, and promotion of organ reserve.
Functional pediatrics looks at how the unique genetic predisposition with which each child is born interacts with the physical, emotional, and spiritual factors to which that child is exposed. Taking into account everything that is put into a child’s body (from the food they eat, the air they breathe the water the drink, the thoughts they think, and the toxins they’re exposed to), functional pediatrics explores how these interface with biochemical individuality to manifest as each child’s specific expressions of wellness or illness. Understanding and learning to use the functional medicine matrix is a powerful way for pediatric healthcare providers to assist children and their families on their road to optimal health.
Day One will explore the guiding principles of Functional Medicine. Included in this discussion will be a review of the Functional Medicine Matrix, when and how to use a variety of functional laboratory tests, along with pharmacological, botanical, and nutritional treatment options. Day Two will review functional approaches to various childhood disorders (asthma, eczema, ADHD, gastrointestinal disease, autoimmune illness), along with specific studies, and allow participants an opportunity to discuss cases of their own.
