Baby Crib Mattress: Make Sure It’s Non-Toxic

Baby Crib MattressOf all the new baby items you think you need, a baby crib mattress can have the greatest effect on the health and wellness of your baby. This is one item that needs special attention. If you are on a budget and trying to save money, there are a lot of things you can do without, but just don’t compromise on your baby’s crib mattress. Typical crib mattresses can be very toxic to babies. There is even evidence that the off-gassing from crib mattresses can be a cause of SIDS.

You probably already know to buy a firm mattress for your newborn, but you may not know how important it is to check into the materials used. Typical crib mattresses are made with polyurethane foam and the waterproof covering is usually vinyl or another toxic plastic. Chemical fire retardants are also added. These materials off-gas and your baby can breathe in these poisonous gases while sleeping or playing on the mattress.

I’ve been researching toxicity of baby products for over 10 years and I’m absolutely convinced that a baby mattress is one of the biggest threats to babies. Although this news may be alarming, my intention is not to spread fear. It is to empower you to know there are choices. Fear is paralyzing; knowledge is power. The following report will provide more information to help you make important choices.

Choose the Best Non-Toxic Baby Crib Mattress

I searched for the best baby crib mattress available – one that is waterproof and truly non-toxic.  There are several safe organic baby crib mattresses available, but Naturepedic  makes the only waterproof organic baby crib mattress that is non-toxic and safe.

  1. Hi, I’m Linda.. new to this space. Can someone help me find a site that offers natural/ eco-friendly baby products?

I’ve found a few sites but not all their products are organic or eco-friendly, and it’s hard to find a site that has cute stuff.

  2. Hello, I would like to know if Healthy child has done any research on Smartsilk, it claims to be natural and free of chemicals, and that it also repels dust mites however it is fire retardant. I would like to purchase some mattress pad and bedding for my asthmatic 3 year old whom is allergic to dust mites. After purchasing a naturepedic organic mattress for his toddler bed, and organic sheets, I don’t want to add any fire retardant laced mattress cover. Please advice.
